Brett Kays

Lead Minister

Brett is Southpoint’s founding minister (since 1992), and has served in ministries in Ohio, Indiana and Michigan since 1984. His degrees in Bible, Ministry and Theology (B.A., M.A., M.Div.) come from Cincinnati Christian University. In Indianapolis, Brett worked as a Christian radio announcer, met his wife, Penny, in their church youth group (also a CCU graduate and a Southpoint Administrative Assistant), and married in 1985. They have two sons and a daughter-in-law, Steve & Kelly, and Thomas.

Trent Shivley

Central Operations Minister

Trent was born and raised in the mid-Michigan area. He has a Bachelors in Automotive Management from Ferris State University and a certificate in Bible from Moody Theological Seminary. Trent started serving in ministry full-time in 2005 and has been serving at Southpoint since 2010. He has been married to his wife, Sarah, since 2008 and they have a son named Evan and a daughter named Taya.

Mark Essick

Allen Park Campus Minister

Mark was born in King, North Carolina and grew up on Pop-Tarts & sweet tea. He graduated from Kentucky Christian University in 1999 where he met his wife, Cindy. Cindy & Mark have three kids, a daughter-in-law, and 2 grandkids. They served in churches in both Kentucky & North Carolina, then came to Southpoint in 2006. They are both passionate about growing healthy families and training/sending kids and adults to go share the gospel all over Downriver & the world.

Cindy Bobruk

Trenton Associate Minister

Cindy started attending Southpoint in 1994 after seeing an ad in the yellow pages that said, “Come as you are!” She met her husband, Greg, at Southpoint and married in 2000. They have seven kids and 5 grandkids. Cindy came on staff in 2005 after working in the legal field for 17 years and loves to make sure people feel welcomed and connected here. She loves to collect vinyl records, and at home she relaxes by watching movies and and spending time with her family.

Ben Spencer

Creative Arts Minister

Ben was born in Texas but raised in Kansas, with his seven other siblings. When he graduated High School, he returned to Texas where he served in a ministry for five years. He met a Michigan gal there named Amy. They dated long distance for a few years then got married and served in youth ministry in Virginia. In 2012, Ben and Amy moved back to Michigan to be closer to family, and that’s when they made Southpoint their home church. Ben loves to write songs, play his guitar and sing, play basketball, and hang out with family and friends. Ben and Amy have two daughters: Moriah and Selah.

Dawnell Jordan

Campus Operations Director

Dawnell has been a member of Southpoint since 2006, and worked in the medical field for 17 years before joining our staff. As a volunteer, she has been dedicated to Info Central and supporting C-Groups for many years, became the Trenton Campus Pastor’s Administrative Assistant in 2014, and hired on to her staff role in July 2017. Dawnell has been married to Thomas since 1993 and they have 3 children: Aaron, Aden and Emma. When not around Southpoint, she’s usually attending her son’s hockey games, her daughter’s softball, dance or cheer, or just spending time with family.

JoEllen Hurst

Student Connections Director

JoEllen was born and raised in Trenton. With a Masters in Education, she spent nearly 10 years as a public school teacher before deciding to home school her own children. JoEllen has served in the NexGen ministry in some capacity since 2005 before joining the staff team in 2015. Married in 2001, JoEllen and her husband, Chris, have three teenagers: Haydn, Rylee, and McKay. When not writing lessons, prepping for students on the weekend, or trying to keep up with the latest teen culture, JoEllen loves to cook, exercise, read, and watch movies with her family. Her passion is for students and their families to love God deeply and share His truth boldly.

Jorel McCree

Student Environments Director

Jorel was born and raised in the Metro Detroit area where he graduated from Carlson High School. There he met his wife Ciara (the girl next door). They have a beautiful daughter Mackenzie who loves all things gymnastics & crafts. To date, he’s spent almost 10 years in the Marketing & Advertising industry with a Bachelors in Marketing from Eastern Michigan University. Jorel has served in the NexGen ministry since 2015 before joining the staff team in 2019. He’s passionate about traveling, food, and helping to Win Downriver Students to Christ.

Kristin Krogol

Student Operations Administrator

Kristin has been a member of Southpoint since 2003 and came on staff in 2019. Kristin and her husband, Jesse, have 3 kids, 2 dogs, chickens, and bees. They dream of "retiring" on a self-sustaining farm in the UP. If you ask those close to her they'll tell you she has a book problem and likes to bake. Kristin also enjoys anything Christmas, playing board & video games, and gardening.

Michael Leich

Technology Minister

Mike was born and raised in downriver Michigan. He has a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Michigan. Mike started serving in Creative Arts back in 2012 and eventually came on staff part time in 2016.  He has been married to his wife Alexa since 2017 and they have a 2-year-old son named Charlie. 

Rachel Reinhardt

Trenton Production Minister

Rachel was born in New York, but was raised in Southeast Michigan. She has a Bachelors in Electronic Media and Film Studies. She married her husband Michael in 2011 and they have three children together: Sophia, Eric, and Kaycee. They started serving at Southpoint shortly after they became members in 2011, and Rachel came on staff in 2019. Rachel loves baking, being crafty, and spending time with her family and friends. 

Jon Langley

Allen Park Kids Director

Jon was born and raised in downriver. He graduated from Union College (KY) where he met his wife Ellen. They’ve been married since April 2019 and have a son, Luca. Jon loves mexican food and going to the movies. Jon is passionate about leading others to Christ and constantly finding ways to improve and be an example for others.

Kim Kamm

Connections Director

Kim grew up in Downriver. That is where she met her husband John in 1991 and eventually married. An amazing opportunity arose and we moved out of Downriver. During this time she worked in both the Dental and medical field. They happily returned to Downriver to raise two awesome kids, Sydney and Zachary. Looking for a Church home, they were invited to Southpoint in 2008. They immediately felt right at home and jumped right in! It was in her small groups and serving, where she found her passion. Her greatest desire is to see everyone know and love Jesus by connecting people in the Church, to one another and to God. This is how her role, as the Connection’s Director at Southpoint, came about. Kim enjoys games (she can be very competitive at times), coffee, camping and hanging out with her family and friends. Although not in that order.

Jennifer Burns

Trenton Groups Minister

Jenna has been a member of Southpoint since 2005 and worked in the education field before joining our staff in 2008 in Student Ministry. She later became Assistant to the Lead Minister. She's been married to David since 1989. They have a son, Dillan, who serves in the USAF, and a daughter and son-in-law, Rachel & Evan, who enjoy working together on their first home. A lifelong resident of Michigan, Jenna is excited to see people engaging in God's Word together and encouraging one another in a community of small groups. She's always ready to come alongside those ready to make the Best Decision Ever of following Christ through baptism. When she has spare time she enjoys reading, silent movies, organizing anything, and hanging out with her family and close friends.

Heather Rogers

Trenton Kids Director

Heather was born in raised in the Downriver area. She and her husband, Bobby, have two children, Cora and Weston, 2 dogs and 4 cats. Heather has been serving in Southpoint's Kids Ministry shortly after coming to Southpoint in 2011. She became a member in 2012 and came onto her staff position in 2019. In her free time, Heather loves spending time outdoors with her family and friends, camping, hiking and gardening. When she has to be stuck inside, she enjoys watching movies and playing board games with her family. She also works, part time, at Penrickton Center for Blind Children as a child care worker with blind and multiply disabled children. Heather loves being a small part of helping kids build their own authentic faith, partnering with parents and encouraging volunteers to carry out God's plan and vision.
